The Forgotten Mothers

Parents abandoned at old age hom

A mother’s importance is irrefutable, and it is to commemorate their significance that Mother’s Day is celebrated every year. All mothers deserve to feel special and loved. However, not all of them do. Thousands of mothers are left to languish in old age homes, uncared for and forgotten. There was once a time when their opinions mattered and the entire family looked after them. However, children started migrating to other parts in search of better opportunities, and joint families soon broke apart. With the disintegration of joint families, the elderly have found themselves unwelcome in their children’s homes. They are often viewed as a burden and have no place in their children’s lives.

Old age homes are the perfect solution. Initially established as temporary residences for people whose children had moved abroad, they have now become a sort of dumping ground for dependants. They are left to live out the remainder of their days in solitude, bereft of love and affection. Their living conditions are mostly deplorable, some don’t even get adequate food. Those who can afford private homes find comfortable lodgings. However, no amount of physical amenities can assuage the sting of their children’s betrayal. Some are put in a home and abandoned, never to be visited again. Others are visited occasionally, but even this cannot substitute the comfort of knowing that your family is nearby.

This blatant disregard for the elderly is appalling, and shows how ungrateful and selfish society is becoming. Let this mother’s day serve as an eye opener for us all, and let us strive to make our own mothers feel loved and important.
